Northport, Elwood Schools Closed Monday

After school activities canceled

Northport-East Northport and Elwood school districts have canceled school Monday due to continuing unsafe road conditions. All after school activities are canceled as well.

Northport-East Northport School District is making up days lost to Hurricane Sandy by sacrificing the entire February break, Monday through Friday, to reach the minimum 180 instructional days required by State law. Any snow days and they'll have to cut into March, they said in November.

How will the closure affect you? Tell us in the comments.

For Leah Bush, this was the only coverage of Elwood School District events since January 17th, and coverage was minimal compared to that of the Northport School District for the past year or so.
Patch used to have relevance for Elwood when Debbie Sullivan (and Kelly Campbell before her) attended Elwood BOE meetings, and also looked into issues that did or might affect the district. Lately Patch seems to look for hot-button issues, that can generate volatile (perhaps that's an insufficient word) reactions from people, and Northport seems to have more volatile reactors than does Elwood. Elwood went through its own governance turmoils in the early 2000's, but good reporters should look for substance and good examples, and not merely generate steam. Sadly, Patch seems to have lost its way, and I hope you will now reverse that.
