Northport BOE Approves Second Five-Year Term for Superintendent

Dr. Marylou McDermott was sworn in at Monday's Board meeting for another five-year term following unanimous approval by trustees.

“I, Marylou McDermott, hereby affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of Superintendent of Schools of the according to the best of my ability.”

With those words, McDermott was sworn in by District Clerk Beth Nystrom for another five-year term as Superintendent following the unanimous approval by Board trustees at the end of the June 6 Board of Education meeting.

Board President Stephen Waldenburg praised McDermott for a “job well done” and emphasized her willingness for the past three years to take a salary freeze.

Trustee Donna McNaughton echoed Waldenburg’s praise. “The integrity and honor she brings to the district is something I can be proud of," she said.

McDermott replaced former Superintendent William Brosnan upon his retirement in 2006.

Before that she was Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Garden City Public Schools, a post she had held since 2001.

According to The Empire Center for New York Policy's databse web site, seethroughny.net, the superintendent's total compensation for the 2009-10 school year was $248,400, which may include, in addition to her salary, allowances such as travel and expenses.

Patch has requested a copy of McDermott's new contract but has not yet obtained it. Her 2006 contract is attached to this article.
