Northport BOE Approves $156.5 M Budget

Budget to be put before voters on May 21.

After over four hours of deliberation Monday night, the Northport-East Northport Board of Education approved a $156,596,051 budget to be put before voters on Tuesday, May 21. See voting information here.

The budget represents a tax levy increase of 1.98 percent from 2013-2013, well under the 3.43 percent cap allowed by the state. The estimated tax rate increase is 2.197 percent with a 1.72 percent budget-to-budget increase.

The board arrived at the final budget after tweaking a $156,516,783 proposed budget presented by Superintendent Marylou McDermott at the beginning of the meeting.

The board made the following additions on the expenditure side:

  • $52,000 added back in for IB Program registration fees
  • $100,000 added back in for the AIS summer program, which will now offer classroom instruction for reading only

To make up for the difference, the board made $72,732 in cuts:

  • $10,732 cut by reducing the printing and postage line items for Our Schools and the district calendars by a third. The number of publications mailed out will be cut by half.
  • $15,000 cut by reducing one attendance runner.
  • $5,000 by reducing the line item on litigation.
  • $42,000 by cutting approximately half a position from the unallocated position line item, originally budgeted for five full-time positions.

The board also took $100,000 from the unemployment reserve and $25,000 from the workers comp reserve on the revenue side.

The budget includes $3,300,000 in the assigned fund balance, $11,827,869 in state aid.

$1.9 million in capital projects were approved within the budget. Trustee Joe Sabia argued for a zero percent increase and opposed the budget.
