Elwood Boosters Donate $41K To Schools

The Elwood Booster Club has contributed $26,000 toward a $35,000 renovation of the Glenn High School baseball field, the centerpiece of a combined $41,000 package of donations provided to the school system this week.

The latest in donations from a club that has in three years tallied over $100K in direct grants or equipment to the school district, the funds have been earmarked for a number of arts, education and athletic activities at all four of the district’s schools.

“We try to focus on big projects, things that the school district couldn't pay for otherwise," said Heather Mammolito, a member of the Booster Club. “We’re dedicated to spreading out the money in a diverse way -- athletics, arts and education.”

At the school district's board of education meeting Thursday night, trustee Bill Gutekunst thanked the club for its latest donation. And in their turn, the club thanked the community. 

“These kinds of donations would not be possible without their generosity and participation in our after school clubs and fundraising events,” said Mammolito. “So we’re very grateful for the support within our community.”

In addition to the high school baseball field, projects that will be funded from their most recent donation include a music trip to Vienna by high schoolers ($7,000); and such other projects as after school clubs, book club materials & cameras, high school athletic equipment/repairs, and campus-wide signs.

The past 12 months or so has seen the Elwood Booster Club make other significant contributions to the schools. Among them: $5,600 for installation of playground equipment at Boyd; $2,500 to support Glenn music programs; green fees for the golf team; and $20,000 for renovation of the high school track.

"Every dime we make goes to the district -- from zumba classes, yoga classes, all the programs we put on," said Mammolito.

The Elwood Booster Club called on the community to continue to help, noting that the ballfield fundraising drive is not yet over. “The effort continues,” Mammolito said. “We need help to raise the remaining $10,000 for this project. We're asking the public to please join us for Octoberfest, a fundraiser we're holding at Changing Times on Elwood Road, on Oct. 14."
