District: Lindy Students' Winter Break Canceled

Due to closings following Hurricane Sandy the Lindenhurst School District has canceled February break.

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy Lindenhurst students will lose their mid-Winter recess in February.

In a letter from Superintendent Richard Nathan sent home with students on Thursday and posted to the Lindenhurst School District website, the changes to the 2012-13 school calendar were outlined.

The changes are as follows:

  • Tuesday, February 19, to Friday, February 22, are now school days.
  • Thursday, March 14, which was designated as a Superintendent's Conference Day, is now a regular school day.

Nathan explained in the letter the District will be short of the required 180 days schools in New York state must be in session by four days because the effects of Sandy forced the District to close for a total of seven days.

The New York State Education Department regulations require schools to be in session a minimum of 180 days or risk losing a portion of NYS aid.

In the letter the superintendent further outlined the NYSED guidelines regarding school closures and make-up days districts must follow. (Click here or see the accompanying PDF file of the letter for more information.)

"It's not uncommon during harsh Winters districts must use vacation days in the Spring to make up snow days. With the District required to use up any and all vacation days, and with the potential of snow this Winter, we'll need to use Spring break to make up for possible snow closings due to inclement Winter weather," Nathan wrote to explain the changes to this year's school calendar.

As a result a resolution recommending the above revisions to the 2012-13 school calendar will be made to the Board of Education at its monthly business meeting on Wednesday, December 5, scheduled for 8 p.m. at the McKenna Administration Building on Daniel Street.

Meanwhile on the new last night they said NYS will be giving less aid to schools for 2013/14 school year. Can anybody explain that?
