Village to Discuss Revoking Pool Law at Meeting

Northport Board of Trustees meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Village Hall.

A law governing swimming pools in Northport will be on the chopping block at Tuesday's Village Board of Trustees meeting.

The village will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. in to consider a proposal to strike chapter 264 governing swimming pools from Northport's code books, reasoning that existing New York State law is sufficient and that local code is a redundancy. The New York State code can be found here.

The Village's existing requiring a self-latching fence around the perimeter of an inground pool is much stricter than the State's. See what people had to say about it .

"The Board finds that the Village is required to adhere to the State Building Code unless unique local conditions can be demonstrated to justify deviations from the State Building Code," the proposal in the attached PDF agenda reads. "Based upon the fact that the pool enclosure requirements set forth in the State Code are sufficient to provide protection to the public, the Board finds that there are no grounds to deviate from the State Building Code."

If approved, the law would take effect immediately.
