Town to Introduce Parking Muni-Meters

Meter system found in New York City to roll out in Huntington Village, train station.

The Town of Huntington is launching a pilot project to replace old parking meters with "pay and display" centralized muni-meters like those found in New York City.

The muni-meters will replace the old meters in downtown Huntington Village on Main Street and New York Avenue as well as the Huntington LIRR and will accept both cash and credit cards. Muni-meters may also be installed on Broadway, in front of the train station.

The Town touted the system's flexibility, efficiency and ease of use, and said it will also free up manpower.

"You can program them, change the cost, the time, you can use credit cards. Some of them you can even program so that when the meter expires, it automatically recharges the credit card for another hour," Town Supervisor Frank Petrone said.

Alongside the muni-meters, the town is proposing a change to the fine structure for illegal/overtime parking at metered spots. Under the proposed amendment, the first offense is a warning, the second offense is a $25 fine and the third offense is a $50 fine. The town will hold a public hearing on the issue at their next board meeting on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.

The town has contracted with manufacturers Devo & Associates to buy 28 muni-meters at $10,000 each.
