Update: Town Holds Loud Partiers Accountable

Huntington tightens regulation to better enforce noise violations at special events.

A recent amendment to the Town of Huntington noise ordinance will enable the Town to better regulate noise levels at large parties.

The Town board voted Tuesday to require anyone holding a special event to apply for a permit with the town and pay a $25 fee. This fee is nothing new, according to Town Attorney Cindy Mangano. But with the new amendment, the Town will be better able to hold violators accountable.

"We got rid of some loopholes in the law that will help our code enforcement department to enforce it and enhance people's quality of life as a result," said Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.

Councilman Mark Mayoka voted against the amendment, saying the term could encompass anything from a graduation party to an anniversary celebration because what constitutes a "special event" was not defined in the legislation.

"The bottom line is the universe for the fees is expanding to affect thousands of families who now have to go to Town hall," Mayoka said. "There's time, there's effort when they just want to enjoy themselves."

According to the Town Code, violation of the current noise ordinance could result in a $50-250 fine for first offense without a permit.
