Tell Us: Is Town Supervisor's Salary Appropriate?

Frank Petrone among highest paid supervisors on Long Island, says Newsday.

Town of Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone is among the highest paid town supervisors on Long Island, according to a recent article from Newsday.

With an annual salary of $158,543 in 2011, he earned roughly 77 cents per resident, says the article, in comparison to Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, who made $150,742 or 20 cents per person. Then there's Shelter Island Supervisor James Dougherty, who is paid $30.53 per resident.

Petrone, a full time employee, received a $4,360 pay raise with the 2013 budget in September. The town board members, who work part-time, took a pay freeze.

Are you surprised at Petrone's annual salary? Do you think he should have given himself a raise? Tell us in the comments.

To be fair all the more reason and justification for him to not get or ask for a raise of pay OR expenses.
Franc peetrone December 28, 2012 at 08:27 pm
Your correct he is by action ,word, and deed THE LAZIEST and over paid supervisor.
Franc peetrone December 28, 2012 at 08:31 pm

The salary is completely appropriate for a position with great responsibility. The question is petty. C'mon Patch you can do better.
Btw... I am Free2B me

No one is denying he has some responsibility. He may or may not be considered a hard worker, depending on who he is working hard for. I agree that the man looks upon his taxpayers with total contempt during public board meetings. He also plays games with his fellow board members who are of the opposing party - not giving them the information they are entitled to have either at all or in a timely manner.
The biggest problem with his being able to vote himself a raise, is that right now he is looking towards retirement and a nice pension. Since he either may not run again or he knows he would be voted out of office should he run again, he is now bumping up his income for a greater final average salary figure, used to calculate his pension. THAT'S what this is all about people! BTW - police and school admins or teachers cannot give themselves a raise. No comparison.

Just did a search on salaries of Governors in the United States. The last year that statistics were available (2010) 42 governors made LESS than Fast Frankie! I think it is much harder to run a state then the Town of Huntington! The man is DEFINITELY overpaid!

Well, according to the website www.seethroughny.net , Supervisor Petrone has already passed $163K for 2012. And let us not forget that just a couple of weeks ago he did authorize a $4300 pay raise for himself. So he'll be looking at somewhere around a $170K salary. This from the man who told the Town's union employees "we all have to make sacrifices.." And then proceeded to order a payroll reduction for them all. When you're making $170K per year, making sacrifices are not too hard. When you're making $40K per year, that sacrifice is crippling. He's a politician, believe me when I say nothing we say here in print nor in public at a meeting will cause him to lose any sleep. He'll sleep very well indeed on his mattresses stuffed with our tax dollars.

Jerome,
I cannot speak for all of the TOH but I can tell you I walk 2+miles/day. I see streets that were clear of debris and no visible downed trees in the front of the property have large mounds of branches and huge tree stumps back on the street. How do you think that the debris got back there??? Perhaps contractors that were to lazy/unscrupulous to complete the job???
rosy gallica December 29, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Robert,
You are comparing apples to oranges. You need to factor in cost of living... LI is notoriously high. All politics start locally.....this salary does not sound so unreasonable. Patch, this is a frivolous question in the 1st place (as many of your questions are). The ability to give oneself a raise does merit debate tho. I am always puzzled as to why no one ever mentions the obscene salaries paid to CEO's, sports and film/entertainment/media persons......
Sue December 29, 2012 at 01:08 pm
yes, John you make a good point. People talk about how expensive it is to live on LI. Try telling that to the Town employees earning $40,000 per year who took a pay freeze and lag. These are the people on the front lines listening to residents complain about how high taxes are. Sometimes the Town Board forgets that employees are residents too.

Did you know that after Hurricane Sandy our TOH guys were sent first to Amityville to help clean up that town? I couldn't figure out what was taking so long to clean up our town until I saw a copy of the Amityville Record with a picture no-less thanking the TOH.

Just read The Huntingtonian. Yep, Frank has got to go. And, to think people blame the unions for the economy and yet the CSEA on Dec 6th supported the cut backs to save their jobs. Mr Petrone has become a nasty self righteous supervisor and he's certainly not a team player. I do feel sorry for Cook and Mayoka who must deal with his wrath every day.
Free 2B Me December 29, 2012 at 03:28 pm
Instead of reading biased reports, go to the Town's website and watch the video of the meeting.
Mayorka proposed a cut in salary to only one full time elected official and did not look to impact his fellow Republican officials... shameful. Petrone wisely suggested that a proposal that impacts salary of elected officials be coupled with meaningful ethics legislation to ensure that conflicts of interest either are not already present or do not occur with elected officials. Particularly those that do business in the Town. Get the facts and come to a reasonable conclusion. After all, I am Free 2B... me. . . . . . .
RAY December 29, 2012 at 03:59 pm
Free 2B...me,
Are you running for a political position in this town down the road, like Town Super ???
jj December 29, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Petrone is one Politician who milks the system and is riding the Gravy train.Very lazy man.He has done nothing in his last several years. He is always on vacation.
jj December 29, 2012 at 04:12 pm
If he was doing a good job as a Town Supervisor I can justify his salary. He does live in Dix Hills which is a expensive place to live.
Pat December 29, 2012 at 04:16 pm
Thank you Jerome, and those who replied to your post regarding the debris still on the streets of this town. In my area of East Northport (Tinton Place) there are still tree trunks and huge tree roots in front of homes in surrounding areas. Trucks cleared debris from many of the streets, but left the larger mounds still sitting there, with no cleanup crews in sight for many weeks. Where are they? Why haven't they returned to finish clearing these streets? Where are our tax dollars going?
Frank December 29, 2012 at 05:06 pm
Not a fan of his, but his pay is less than half of most school district Superintendents for running an entire town 12 months a year. That is where your outrage should be focused!
Christina December 29, 2012 at 05:39 pm
We need representation on the town board from someone from Huntington VIllage!
Rose December 29, 2012 at 05:54 pm
If he has not moved again in the past 3 years I believe he still resides in the Commack Hamlet.
VillageJenny December 29, 2012 at 06:40 pm
About 150K would be reasonable.  To vote himself a $4,360 raise is a greedy disgrace and a slap in the face to every Town taxpayer.
We must also examine the extravagant salaries and overtime paid to other Town employees.  Newsday published an article this week detailing the earnings of all Town employees in the year 2011.  My  jaw dropped. For example, an auto mechanic has a base salary of 75k and with OT actually earned 126k in 2011.  Maybe he has a PhD? A tree trimmer whose base is 43k earned 102k in 2011.  Yes, there was Irene.  With Sandy, he'll probably earn 150k in 2012.  Years and years of study and student loans required to qualify for that job. If you want to read (and weep) more, check out: http://data.newsday.com/long-island/data/town-city/2011-payroll/ Do-able suggestions, anyone?
VillageJenny December 29, 2012 at 06:42 pm
PS from VillageJenny:
And, don't forget, we have to add on fabulous benefits plus early retirements, generous pensions and great medical benefits for life for employees and spouses.
Sue December 29, 2012 at 07:26 pm
Keep scrolling until you get to the clerical staff who earns $35,000-$45,000 per year. These are the people that took the pay freeze and have limited opportunity for overtime. Some of them even went to college or currently have kids in college. Some of them have mortgages. They all live on Long Island and we know what that costs.
Please don't group all Town employees together in this category of extravagant salaries with overtime because it is not representative of all Town employees.
tony December 29, 2012 at 08:44 pm
While I am surprised and disappointed about the pay raise, Mr. Petrone has done an outstanding job as supervisor; we live in a great town and thats' why the residents re-elect him over and over again.
Free 2B Me December 29, 2012 at 08:51 pm
nah, not Town Supervisor.... it does not pay enough ;-o
.
VillageJenny December 29, 2012 at 11:47 pm
In reply to Sue:
Thank you for pointing out that not all Town employees are overpaid or eligible for enormous overtime pay. My guess is that the vast majority of these are women and the ones with the big money earnings are men. Am I wrong?
Sue December 30, 2012 at 12:16 am
Men and women have the opportunity to work in all areas. However, like in private, clerical is predominantly female
rosy gallica December 30, 2012 at 12:32 am
Thanks for the fascinating reading VJ.
Unfortunately your comments regarding PHD's/etc smack of snobbery tho. Our employees live on LI with a very high cost of living.... what would be your answer privatization?? Look at the privatized prison system...... PS chack out town of hempstead datum.
Pat December 30, 2012 at 12:34 am
Agree with you Laura, 100%. Why am I still looking at debris in front of my house at this late date, when other areas have been cleared for weeks?! Thanks for posting.
Free 2B Me December 30, 2012 at 12:53 am
Why would any of you compare an ELECTED position to any of these other jobs?
. Last I checked, the majority of Huntington hired the supervisor, and, in November, you may choose to hire someone else... or not. . . As for me... I am Free 2B... me. . . .
