Tell Us: Does the Highway Department Need a Facebook Page?

Social media outlets could provide another way for residents to get in touch.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said something interesting at the Town Board meeting Tuesday.

During the blizzard, he said he received multiple Facebook messages from people whose streets weren't plowed, or who had been plowed in. He then forwarded those messages to the Highway Department Superintendent.

That got us to thinking: Social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter would be a great, cost-free, low maintenance, way for residents to notify the highway department of snow emergencies in their neighborhoods.

Posting on Facebook and Twitter leaves a "paper trail" for both residents and government officials to respond, gauge the success of response, and map out those areas that might be habitually neglected.

What do you think? Do you think it's time for the Highway Department or any other department to get on Facebook?
