Suffolk Warns Gougers

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone: Gouging 'will not be tolerated.'

Whether it’s the price of gas or a loaf of bread, Suffolk County investigators are on the lookout for price gouging.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone issued a stern warning to gougers:

“I want to make it clear to people who think they will take advantage of this crisis situation and take advantage of people who need help that this will not be tolerated,” Bellone said. “Investigators from our consumer affairs department will be following up on any and all complaints. We received a report of one 7-Eleven charging $10 for a loaf of bread. This is unacceptable. The prices you were charging prior to the storm should be the prices you are charging now.”

Report gouging to Consumer Affairs at 800-909-5423.

Dear Mr. Sewer,
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Also just got word that the Blue Point Diner is charging 30.00 for paancakes and $8.00 for coffee!!!!!!!!!!! Word came from a policeman so I believe this to be true.
Arlene Guzman Capobianco November 2, 2012 at 05:47 pm

robkoz November 2, 2012 at 05:48 pm
Stossel thinks gouging is ok during a disaster. What a f#$ktard! I lean towards conservative but this is just outright greed!

Patch called and this is not true at all. Prices remain what they were before the storm.
Jim Bennett November 2, 2012 at 10:05 pm
Everyone is right about that Shell station on Smithtown Blvd. His prices have always been outrageous. I've lived in the area for over 35 years and I've never, ever bought gas from that creep.

christine you are so full of sewer waste
NY Dumpster Diver November 3, 2012 at 11:11 am
It's not greed. Filling your tank and leaving NONE for others is greed. The purpose of gouging is to support the element of Supply and Demand.
Government Schools have people thinking the way you do CHUM!

Valero in East Moriches has gas and are VERY honest with their prices $4.11. East Moriches Wave, (old Pit stop), was charging $4.95 a gallon, sick...New gas station in Center Moriches, Country Gas charging $4.59 with lines around the town. I can't stand people like this who take advantage of a bad situation!

Contact the Suffolk County Department of Consumer Affairs if you suspect price gouging. They said gas stations are only permitted to charge their current projected cost. Wading River Citgo $3.69 to $4.50 was alot. The Riverhead Supervisor was appalled at this too and met the Consumer Affairs down there. The department reported that they were fined. :)
A.K. November 4, 2012 at 01:40 pm
The Valero Station on the circle in Riverhead has no prices posted and charging $4.41 for regular gas. Just reported them to consumer affairs I hope they get a huge fine......besides that you have to endure their attitudes when you get to the pump like they got something over on you.
Chet Szarejko November 4, 2012 at 09:13 pm
The USA station in Flanders charged $4.49 per gallon....a real rip off. I hope that Consumer's advocate takes care of them.
Chet Szarejko November 4, 2012 at 09:17 pm
I purchased gas the same day on my way to Woodstock and paid $3.49 per in New Jersey and in Woodstock at $3.89. I hope that Suffolk County is serious about getting these gougers
justbreath November 4, 2012 at 09:21 pm
excellent!!!
K Dawg November 4, 2012 at 09:28 pm
Citgo and USA Gas on Route 110 $4.49 on Friday when they got the power back. Went to Hess in Farmindale $ 3.90, CREEPS will never use them again will call consumer affairs.
Chet Szarejko November 4, 2012 at 09:49 pm
How can you blame big government for the increase in gas prices during these desperate and unfortunate happeningss in our society? Aren't these gas stations owned by individual entrepreneurs and big corporations.... who don't seem to care that their greed effects the life quality of the consumer? ......and isn't it the job of big government to protect the individual citizen from being ripped off? Who are these citizens who criticize government without understanding the need of any democratic nation to have a government that offers a concern and cares for the best interests of their citizens?
A.K. November 4, 2012 at 11:30 pm
After I lodged a complaint and told others to do so ......price came down 20 cents and there was a trooper stationed at the circle.....not enough being done if you ask me. THat USA station is a rip off even when something like this isn't going on ...he changes his prices at least 2x's a day depending on the traffic flow
AMANDA November 12, 2012 at 11:07 pm
ITS NOT PRICE GOUGING. THE GAS WENT UP WHEN THE PORTS WERE SHUT DOWN. DO YOU EXPECT THE STATION OWNERS NOT TO RAISE PRICES WHEN THEY'RE BEING CHARGED HIGHER PRICES TO GET THE GAS?!?!?! IDIOTS
Jim November 12, 2012 at 11:33 pm
You are a pitifully uninformed, unintelligent person. Keep pumping that sh!t, because that's all you're ever going to be good for. I hope Ranger Sewer is your company and not someone you work for, because I can assure you that you will NEVER get my business and I will never refer you to anyone else I know. In fact, I'm going to make sure to NOT promote your business to others because you have no idea what you're talking about. Consiracy theorist!
Jim November 12, 2012 at 11:34 pm
Just STOP. It's obvious you're a strict right wing(nut). If Romney won the election or there was a republican in office, you'd be shouting CAPITALISM AT ITS FINEST, MAKE ALL THE $$$ YOU CAN. Everytime I read one of your uninformed comments, it makes me want to jab pens into my eyes!
Jim November 12, 2012 at 11:46 pm
Amanda - it was gouging when stations were charging $3.77/gal before the storm and the same station that lost power in the storm got power back the next day and opened and raised the price to $4.09 without ever getting a delivery of gas. They took advantage of people's need and charged .32 per gallon more, even though their cost for that same gas remained unchanged.
John Gruber November 12, 2012 at 11:59 pm
yea Ranger, government is actually keeping the gas away from its people. Has nothing to do with the 2 major storms we just had... you have not a friggin clue
John Gruber November 13, 2012 at 12:03 am
People, the government is not responsible for the gas shrotage, despite what "experts" like Ranger Sewer protest. There's a shortage because
A) Sandy prevented any type of tankers to bring in oil for at least a day B) the many people who were/are without power and have generators require gas to operate them C) panic and paranoia by the general public
Jim Bennett November 13, 2012 at 12:19 am
I might buy that if Hess didn't keep their prices at $3.73. Hess also had gas when no one else did. Maybe that's because, unlike Mobile and Gulf, they weren't trying to create an artificial shortage so they could jack their prices up.
Terry November 13, 2012 at 01:43 am
HESS kept their prices the same and gas prices went down across the country. We were gouged by every other gas station.
joan November 13, 2012 at 02:23 am
Terry, that's really not true. What area are you from? You should not say every other gas station price gouged except for Hess. Gulf in my area was the same price as Hess and never raised their price. Please don't say something that isn't true. That is just irresponsible.
Jim Bennett November 13, 2012 at 11:27 pm
Joan, the fact of the matter is that Gulf and Mobil are by and large the biggest offenders when it comes to price gouging. The Company owned stations in the Smithtown/Hauppauge area routinely have prices that are 50 to 60 cents higher per gallon than anyone else. There is one independent Gulf on 347 in Nesconset whose prices are usually competitive but he's the exception. The prices at the local Gulf and Mobile stations are so much higher than everyone else that I often wonder if it's their way of telling potential customers to go away and leave them alone.

I'm not accusing anyone of "faking it". http://www.coachoutletonlinegg.com My point is that our Pompeii - like most classical http://www.coachoutletonlineaol.net sites, in fact - is the product of collaboration between http://www.coachfactoryoutletwy.com modern rebuilders and conservators, and the original Roman builders http://www.coachoutletstorefc.com themselves, with the lion's share of the work on our side. And it's no less impressive or moving http://www.coachoutletaol.org for that - as the body casts help to show. One of http://www.coachfactoryonlineest.net the video clips played in the exhibition at the Getty Museum comes http://www.coachfactoryoutletpst.com from Roberto Rossellini's film, Voyage in Italy, in which the lead couple, http://www.coachfactoryoutlettx.com played by Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders, tour the country as their marriage http://www.coachfactoryonlinefc.org disintegrates. On their visit to Pompeii they watch the plaster being http://www.coachoutletwy.com poured into a cavity left by two of the victims. http://www.coachoutletonlineybw.com In the movie's most haunting scene, these victims emerge as a couple.
