More than 37,000 people have enrolled in a health care plan through the state's new health care insurance exchange.
According to New York officials, 174,000 people have applied through the state exchange, set up as part of the federal Affordable Care Act.
The number come as the federal government grapples with tech issues in its central exchange, Healthcare.gov, that have delayed coverage to residents in other states who are required to use that site. New York is one of 16 states that established its own insurance exchange.
State officials said New Yorkers who applied make up about 30 percent of the applications for insurance across the country.
The state offers four tiers of health coverage, varying in cost and coverage, offering benefits from 16 different insurers. According to the state, 75 percent of people enrolling qualify for financial help.
Uninsured state residents have until March 31, 2014 to enroll. However, those who enroll before Dec. 15 will see their coverage start at the beginning of the new year.
