Update: Tornado Warning in Suffolk County Expires

However, severe storms are capable of producing dangerous winds.

UPDATE: The tornado warning issued Friday afternoon for parts of central Suffolk County has expired.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Suffolk County for Friday afternoon, in addition to earlier severe thunderstorm warnings.

The weather service said a strong thunderstorm in Islip moving north at 40 miles an hour is capable of producing a tornado.

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for the East End and other parts of Suffolk County through Friday evening.

If a tornado were to hit, then the NWS said the safest place to be is in the lowest floor of the house.

The storms are expected to clear out of the area by approximately 4 p.m., NWS representatives said.

In Riverhead all Stotzky Park ball fields, including the north soccer field will be closed for the day. USSI Golf is canceled; the skate park is also closed for the entire day.

do we see lightening and hear thunder? or do we actually hear lightening? not being sarcastic, just wondering if we actually hear lightening.

Lightening heats and expands the surrounding air; sound waves. When that expanding air is heard, or felt, it's thunder. Either that or it's Thor.
