Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern’s bill to protect reduce exposure to the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA), contained in thermal paper cash register receipts, will be signed into law by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone Thursday.
The “Safer Sales Slip Act,” which was approved by the Legislature in December, will remove one of the most common sources of exposure to BPA, thermal paper receipts, which use BPA to “develop” the print.
BPA is absorbed through the skin and through hand to mouth contact, and has been linked to cancers of the breast and prostate, endocrine disorders, learning disabilities, obesity and diabetes and is detectable in more than 93 percent of the population.
Joining the Huntington Democrat at the signing ceremony at Jackson's Restaurant in Commack will be Karen Miller, director, Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition, Elsa Ford, director, Brentwood/Bay Shore Breast Cancer Coalition and Shelby Poole, owner, Jackson’s Restaurant, Commack. The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., 6005 Jericho Turnpike, Commack.
The 16th Legislative District covers Centerport, Deer Park, East Northport, Greenlawn, Melville, North Babylon, Dix Hills and Elwood.
