Pilings In, Season Begins

Seymour's recently installed the pilings, floating docks and gangways.

tiny tugboat, the Active, became a pushboat recently when it served as the momentum for the boatyard's crane and a float to make its way to Northport Village Dock to prepare the waterfront for the 2011 season.

"Both the floats and the piles have to be removed at the end of the season so the ice doesn't damage them. In the spring we reinstall all 12 pilings and attach the floats and gangways," said Seymour's Manager Dave Weber.

"It's always great when we set up the village docks. You know the boating season has officially started," Weber added.

This year the began charging overnight docking fees April 1, almost two months earlier than the usual Memorial Day weekend opening.

The cost is $3 per foot from 8 p.m to 8 a.m. The first two hours are free. The village refunds 50 percent of the overnight fee if boat leaves by 11 p.m.
