Petrone Urges Developer to 'Re-Think' Elwood Condos

444 condos proposed for Oak Tree Dairy site.

Town of Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone said he's asked Garden City-based developer Engel Burman to pull their application for a proposed senior housing development on Elwood Road and "re-think" things.

The 444-unit age-restricted "Seasons at Elwood" development proposed at the current site of the Oak Tree Dairy processing plant has met with opposition by a group of residents organized under "Preserve Elwood Now." The group claims the development will further congest traffic on Elwood Road and change the character of the community.

Petrone, addressing members of PEN at last Tuesday's Town Board meeting, said he is not in favor of Engel Burman's proposal which now stands before the Town Planning Board, but cautioned against hasty action. Should the town act in haste and misstep, he said, the project runs the risk of being pushed through by the courts as a result of a law suit.

"They have certain rights," Petrone said. "We can't just ask them to pull it down without having the right basis."

Engel Burman has not withdrawn its application and refused to comment further on the project. Petrone said he will request that they reconsider again by the end of the summer.
