County Nearing Final Vote Regarding Proposed Park Smoking Ban

Bill set for legislative committee vote June 13 in Riverhead.

A resolution to ban smoking in most areas of county parks and beaches is moving along in the Suffolk County Legislature.

After public hearing on the issue was held earlier this week in Riverhead, the bill will now go before the Parks Committee June 13.

by Legis. William Spencer of the 18th District, the proposed law could move to the full body of the Legislature for a final vote as early as June 19.

An amendment to the original bill which eased restrictions for smokers was  by Spencer to allow smoking in designated county parking areas, golf courses and campgrounds.

No penalties are listed in the proposed legislation. Violators of the law could be forced to leave parks on the discretion of park officials, according to Spencer.

Spencer, a doctor, said the smoking ban would help limit children's exposure to smokers and the dangers of second-hand smoke.

About 54 percent of Patch readers favor the smoking ban, according to a .

"El Blombeto" tried this in the City and it didn't work. I guess history repeats itself. Spencer should be a little more creative in his thinking when it comes to the office he holds. I'd like to hear about the amount of complaints that have been received regarding this issue. And if you look into this issue...it will also cost the tax payers money. Don't quit your day job Spencer.

Can you explain how this will cost taxpayers money? And if it does, money well spent. I do hope there will soon be a law where you can not smoke near entry or exit doors. Nothing worse than walking thru a cloud of deadly smoke when entering or exiting a building...
