Northport WWII Vet Receives Conspicuous Service Cross

Leo Giovenco service including working for President Eisenhower and stormed the beaches on D-Day.

(R,C,I-East Northport) attended the 's Christmas party Dec. 10, 2010 and awarded World War II veteran Leo Giovenco with the Conspicuous Service Cross.

Giovenco, worked in headquarters with Allied Expeditionary Force Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower during the Battle of the Bulge and went on to be stationed with General Patton. After being shot, he spent several months in the hospital and was eventually sent back to headquarters with Eisenhower.  

"It was certainly an honor to present this award to a true patriot like Leo Giovenco. He deserves this recognition for everything he has done for this county," said Raia.

Giovenco stormed the beaches on D-Day, was shot during the Battle of the Bulge and subsequently received a Bronze Star with valor, the 4th Highest Award given by the U.S. Military, and the Purple Heart.

The Conspicuous Service Cross is a decoration for military service awarded by the State of New York to members of the military who have also been awarded a previous military decoration.
