Northport Village Hall Open in Emergency

Village Hall is a shelter in an emergency, most stores closed.

Northport Village Hall will remain open and serve as a shelter in an emergency, Mayor George Doll announced Monday morning.

But the villege has no provisions and encourages residents in low lying areas to evacuate to a Suffolk County-run shelter, such as Whitman High School in Huntington Station or Brentwood High School.

Asharoken is also under a state of emergency.

Most stores and eateries around Northport, from McDonald's to Starbucks on Fort Salonga Road, were closed Monday morning.

But Dunkin' Donuts was open and packed with customers. Said one employee manning the cash register: "We'll stay open 'til the power goes out."

Mayor George Doll said a HART bus will transport evacuees to Whitman High School, a designated Suffolk emergency shelter. Anyone who wants to leave Northport Village should report to Village Hall.
