Northport American Legion introduced their candidates for a weeklong seminar showcasing the workings of the American political system.

In an ongoing tradition dating back to 1936, introduced and honored the twenty candidates selected to participate in a  weeklong seminar during which they will learn how state and national political leaders are selected and elected.

According to the program distributed at the event, 49 states take part in this in-depth program which instructs "future leaders of our country" about the workings of the American political system.

Past Commander James Mahoney chaired the Boys/Girls State Committee. Fourteen boys and six girls will travel to two state colleges to  see the American political system in action, he said, adding that the candidates were well-rounded students marked by intelligence and good communication skills.
