Opinions on Long Beach Boardwalk Unveiled
Among the Long Beach residents called to speak at Wednesday’s meeting at City Hall on rebuilding the Hurricane Sandy-damaged boardwalk, some said the new structure should remain true to its name and be built of wood, while others want a concrete center lane that will withstand heavy fire equipment. Residents voiced these and other opinions after Amy Engel, director of Sustainable Long Island, gave a slide presentation on the findings of the public input the Farmingdale-based non-profit organization helped gather for the city.
Horse Rescuer Sues Prosecutor
The owner of a Manorville horse rescue organization has filed a suit against a Suffolk prosecutor after animal cruelty charges lodged against her by the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were dropped in November.
Comic Book Store Opens
Escape Pod Comics, which just opened in Huntington village last week, puts the emphasis on the word "book" in comic book store. Unlike the comic book store in Big Bang Theory, or many others in the area for that matter, this store has no figurines, no card games -- just books. From superheroes to unique stories, there is a comic for everyone, just as their motto suggests. "Part of the reason the shop is laid out this way is that, if you have an interest in any kind of story -- you like a certain kind of movie, a certain kind of book, or a certain kind of musical -- we're going to have something that matches that," store owner Menachem Luchins said.
Residents Peeved Over Industrial Area Form Task Group
A group of Kings Park and Commack residents banded together recently to form a task group to unite residents who live near the intersection of Old Northport and Lawrence Road to stop what they say are hazardous smells and noises emitted from the nearby industrial area. Town officials seem to agree that something does indeed stink, though they are not sure they can pinpoint it.
Lindenhurst Schools Settle Contract
The Lindenhurst School District has settled the first of six employee unit contracts.
"We reached a settlement with our custodians, but we're still in negotiations with our other five units (TAL/teachers' union, aides, clericals, nurses and administrators)," said Superintendent Richard Nathan at the Community Input Night: Budget Overview on Wednesday - the first in the series of school budget 2013-14 meetings this year.
Nassau County Eyes Red Light Cameras in Glen Cove
Two Glen Cove intersections may soon know the flash of red light cameras, according to Mayor Ralph Suozzi. Nassau County's Department of Public Works is considering placing the cameras on Forest Ave. at the intersections with Dosoris Ln. and Walnut Rd., Suozzi said. The County owns Forest Ave. and has final say over the decision, he said, although a third proposed for the Pratt Blvd. intersection has been opposed by the City.
