Narrow Lead for Lally in GOP Primary

The Republican would face Rep. Steve Israel in the general election.

Grant Lally, R-Lloyd Harbor, narrowly led Tuesday's GOP primary election to decide who will face incumbent Democrat Steve Israel in the race for the Third District Congressional seat.

With all districts reporting, Lally brought in 2,857 votes, or about 51 percent, while Stephen Labate, R-Deer Park, took in 2,762 votes, or 49 percent.

Lally is an attorney who had picked up a number of endorsements, including from Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, as well as from the Nassau, Suffolk, and state Republican committees, and leaders of New York’s, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Conservative parties.

Both candidates had run on a platform of lowering taxes, reducing regulations, and repealing the Affordable Health Care Act.

An Iraq war veteran, Labate, now a financial planner, had run against Israel in 2012, but lost a by “a margin of 57.58 percent to 41.65 percent,” according to Newsday.
