Internship Program Opens

Berland sponsoring 'Hire Huntington' for high school students.

An eight-week internship program for high school students will begin operating July 8 in Huntington.

Councilwoman Susan A. Berland is sponsoring "Hire Huntington," the internship that has the town acting as a conduit to partner local businesses and qualified high school students seeking summer internships.

Huntington's students are in the midst of preparing for the summer season. For high school juniors and seniors, summer internships are a big ticket item for college resumes and for Huntington's businesses, summer internships are a great way to tap into the skillset these students are cultivating through their electives and extracurricular activities in school.

"Hire Huntington" runs from July 8 to Aug. 26.

At the end of the internship, participating employers pay a $250 stipend to their student intern.

Businesses interested in participating in the program complete a questionnaire (attached) that details the hours and skills needed from an intern. Students interested in participating in the program also complete a questionnaire that details the hours they are available, the skills they currently have and the fields they would like to explore.

Students who want to participate should call Berland's office at (631) 351-3173.

"The 'Hire Huntington' initiative is a great opportunity for Huntington's businesses to leverage the burgeoning skills and dedication of our high school students and provide them with valuable work experience," Berland said. "Keeping Huntington's talented students local and offering them internships is a great way to ensure a positive and successful future for Huntington's businesses and is one of the reasons why Huntington is such a great place to live, work and raise a family."
