Highway Superintendent: Elect or Appoint?

The proposal to change the office brings out opposition.

Town officials--and residents--are debating a proposal to eliminate the highway superintendent's job as an elective position and make it an appointive one.

A brought out scores of residents and superintendents from other communities in support of keeping the office elective, with only a handful of people expressing a different view. Many insisted that the change would take away their voting rights. The proposal's supporters say it will impove efficiency and save money.

Take our poll and tell us what you think.

Listen, bottom line is that this egomaniac with his name plastered on every flat surface that exists in the Highway Department needed to go years ago. No other elected official has their name on the mudguards of the towns trucks, sawhorses and every sign that has anything to do with the guy that is resposible for road maintenance. It is the epitome of cronyism and arrogance that he is allowed to pull this kind of stuff off. Time to make a change. Pay a guy that has an actual boss and not have the same 30 people vote for him every election day.

The highway super. perhaps overdoes it with respect to his "brand" ; so would any pol who had the opportunity. The roads are generally in good shape and if a resident has a problem who to contact is no mystery. In principle keep the highway super as an elected position It's more responsive.

I am a longtime Huntington resident and I think Mr. Naughton has always done a real good job. The fact that he has run unopposed for re-election these many years speaks to the fact that many people feel the same way. Besides, if someone new is appointed think of all the money it will cost the town to change all those signs! Speaking of which, how about the town eliminate all the signs with the Supervisor and Council members' names at every park and beach? That would save the town a few bucks, I'm sure.

Streamline government by taking away the publics right to choose. Hitler did that in 1933 and see where it got the world. I've never heard such bull. Vote the bums out if they think taking your voice away will work

It sickens me every time I see one of those signs with ANY elected officials name on it. To say that Naughton is the only one guilty of this, is a lie. As if they had ANYTHING to do with the construction of these parks that bears their names on it. Disgusting. And how much does all of that bs signage cost the taxpayers? As for an an egomaniac who needed to go years ago? What about Petrone? Why no make his position, elected by county officials. Further consolidation, no? Of course not. What's good for the goose is never good for the gander. Do as I say, not as I do. Taking away the right to vote for this position, will only make matters worse. If Petroney and crew, stick someone in there that really sucks, how will you get them out, if you can't vote em out? Hmmmmmm.

How about manadatory retirement age for the position?
Bob August 17, 2012 at 06:00 PM
If the Petrone/Berland Gang is allowed to appoint the Highway Superintendent, you can look forward to further creative means of encroachment (at taxpayer expense) on Huntington Village by the Paramount. Keep your voting rights. If you don't like Naughton, vote him out.

As a matter of fact-every park, and every bldg. related to the town has the entire town board listed on a special sign. How much do you think that costs to change every election. And is it really necessary to have Frank and his cronies take the credit for the parks existence? I think not! Naughton does an amazing job. Frank has tried to wear him down over the years by taking money from the highway budget, putting jobs on hold, delaying funding for capital projects, and by taking him to court several times at our (the taxpayers expense) IT'S TIME FOR FRANK AND MARK TO GO!!!! Enough of their fiefdom!!
Naughton August 17, 2012 at 08:16 PM
Hahaha! I'm surprised with all of the screeching about nazis and severing our rights no one has said that if you change this job to a hired position then the terrorists have won. Really folks. Ask yourself if he or whoever is elected does a bad job or is corrupt - what do you do? Impeach him? Good luck. Vote him out? Yeah. Find someone to get the 75 votes to beat him. Probably not gonna happen. Ask any losing fire commissioner candidate on LI. Finally, I know that the board has names on some signage but jeez - this guy is completely over the top. Including mudguards I saw a dump truck where his name appeared 4 times one per side and two mud guards. Wake up and stop being sheep. If hired and he stinks he can be fired. What? Aren't there any highly qualified highway dept veterans that can do his job but be promoted? Stop it. You are embarrassing yourselves.

editors, please remove user name Naughton as it is impersonating a government official which is a felony.
Pam Robinson (Editor) August 17, 2012 at 09:06 PM
Linda, if he claimed to be the highway superintendent in his postings, and he wasn't, he would indeed be misrepresenting himself. But if that is his name, then he's allowed to use it. Just as you're allowed to use whatever name you claim as long as you don't claim to be someone else.
linda August 17, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Now, is that how our democracy works? You don't like what someone has to say and rather than debate the merits of the discussion you bring some TV lawyer nonsense forth that someone that has committed a felony? YOURE TAKING AWAY MY RIGHTS MADAM. What would the Highway Superintendent think?

should we vote on everyone who works there. in fact both counties are considering the same streamlining. as well as the school and fire districts. did you know that the town used to clear snow from all the roads inside the township till every thing got broken up and pieced out. for example why does the county need to clear snow from infront of the hwy facilities on oakwood road and jericho trpk the town plows travel on those roads thru - out the entire storm. not very logical or cost effective. mr naughton only responds to friends, politicos and people who threaten to sue otherwise its a we will be there when we get there attitude. Naughton always says you got to make them think your giving them something when your really giving the nothing. besides you still have the right to vote, just no reason to vote for a board and a highway supt. i mean look where our right to vote for a hwy supt got us.
photomike1 September 14, 2012 at 08:05 AM
hmmmmmmmmmm lets see comparing what 20 parks signs to 60 hwy trucks with 2 mud flaps and 2 signs on each side that 4 signs per truck and aprox 600 barricades that get repainted every year. by the way the barricades are supposed to be stripped with reflective paint and currently do not meet new york state dot safety standards and put the motorist at risk as well as leaving the town and thus taxpayer open to litigation if someone crashes into it. what ever happened to safety first. now thats taking ego to a new level hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. not that frank and the board are any better.
