Receiver of Taxes: Ester Bivona

Long time public servant seeks reelection.

Democratic incumbent Ester Bivona was elected as Town of Huntington Receiver of Taxes in 1991 after nine years serving as Deputy Receiver. She is currently running against Republican candidate Robert Conte.

During her tenure, Bivona opposed the Suffolk County Legislature's $100 additional penalty charge on delinquent taxes, refusing to include the charge on tax bills issued by her office and working to provide tax payers with information enabling them to receive a refund of the charge.

Working through the New York State Receivers and Collectors Association, Bivona lobbied to issue receipts for taxes paid, only when requested. Bivona said this has saved the taxpayers money, in postage and in man-hours needed to provide receipts.

Bivona credits her efforts in making Huntington the first Town Hall equipped with an ATM machine for the convenience of residents and employees and the first town tax office to accept credit cards for tax payments with no charge to the town.

Bivona holds a bachelor's degree in education from SUNY at Geneseo and a masters degree in education from Hofstra University.
