Bio: Andrew Raia, 44, of East Northport has represented District 9 since 2003 and was recently redistricted to District 12 [see PDF map], which includes Northport, East Northport, Asharoken, Eatons Neck, and parts of Commack, Brentwood, Deer Park, Baywood, Islip, and West Islip. He is running for his sixth term in the Assembly.
Prior to his election, Mr. Raia served for twelve years as a leading staff member in legislative offices of the State Assembly and Senate, as well as the Suffolk County Legislature.
He is a member of the Medicaid Waste, Fraud and Abuse Minority Task Force, as well as the Small Business in New York State Minority Task Force. He is also a founding member of the Assembly Minority Task Force on Sex Crimes Against Children and Women and is known for his work with the veteran population. His standing Committee Assignments in 2011 included Banks (Ranking Minority Member), Aging, Health, and Housing. He also served as a representative for the Legislative Council on Health Care Financing.
Raia ran unopposed in both the 2010 and 2012 Republican primaries. He defeated Democrat Christopher Dempsey in the 2010 general election.
