Town BZA Approves Cell Tower Atop Elwood Rd. Firehouse
The Commack Fire Department requested a flagpole to house its telecommunications equipment as well as cellular antennae from two companies.
The Huntington Board of Zoning Appeals approved a request by the to erect a 125-foot flagpole to support its telecommunications equipment on its Elwood Road building just north of Jericho Turnpike.
The structure will also hold cellular communications antennae for Metro PCS and Verizon.
When BZA members asked counsel for the Commack Fire District Joseph F. Bazell if his clients would agree to moving the pole to a more central location on the building if necessary, said that it would. Bazell noted that the cell phone antennas would not be noticeable to the public.

The fire district plans to fly an American flag atop the pole at all times. To be able to do that, the district would need to install equipment to illuminate the flag.
Bazell assured the zoning board that the equipment would not shine into nearby homes and that they would use the minimum wattage possible to illuminate the flag. The application was granted provided that they adhere to the light requests.
The board granted the special-use permit.
