Bathing Advisory Issued at Local Beaches

Elevated bacteria levels present after rain storm, says County.

Following Sunday's heavy rainfall, Suffolk County officials have placed 47 beaches – including 22 in Huntington Township – under a beach advisory due to elevated levels of bacteria, and have cautioned residents to avoid bathing in these areas.

According to a county release, these beaches are "heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries." Two successive tidal cycles will usually fix the problem by flushing the area, according to the county.

The local beaches listed are:

  • Asharoken Beach
  • Bay Hills Beach Association
  • Baycrest Association Beach
  • Centerport Beach
  • Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club Beach
  • Crab Meadow Beach
  • Crescent Beach
  • Eagle Dock Community Beach
  • Fleets Cove Beach
  • Gold Star Battalion Park Beach
  • Head of the Bay Club Beach
  • Hobart Beach
  • Huntington Beach Community Association Beach
  • Knollwood Beach Association Beach
  • Lloyd Harbor Village Park Beach
  • Lloyd Neck Bath Club Beach
  • Nathan Hale Beach Club Beach
  • Prices Bend Beach
  • Steers Beach
  • Valley Grove Beach
  • West Neck Beach
  • Wincoma Association Beach

The advisory is set to expire at 6 a.m. Tuesday unless the Department of Health Services again finds elevated levels of bacteria.
