Asharoken Mayor Urges Residents to Evacuate

HART buses to Walt Whitman High School shelter available noon Saturday at Asharoken Village Hall.

Mayor Patricia Irving is urging residents to evacuate as Hurricane Irene charges up the coast.

"Asharoken Avenue may become impassable and priority must be given to emergency service vehicles. Once the hurricane begins, everyone is urged to stay off the roads," Mayor Irving said in a statement on the Village's website Friday afternoon.

HART buses will arrive at beginning noon Saturday to transport voluntary evacuees to Walt Whitman High School shelter. Additional buses will be provided on an as-needed basis.

The will be providing a marine ambulance service to area hospitals in the case that Asharoken and Eaton's Neck are cut off from the mainland.
