Asharoken Mayor: Seawall 'Did Its Job'

The Asharoken seawall saved the roadway but took a structural hit during Tropical Storm Irene.

The did its job during Tropical Storm Irene, according to Mayor Pat Irving, who said on Monday that it broke the force of waves over Asharoken Avenue but took a structural hit.

"The seawall on the sound side had structural damage," Irving said. "The damage wasn't severe but we had 18 inches of erosion at least, and some smaller boulders have been misplaced."

Village officials met with the Army Corps of Engineers after an inspection of the sea wall Monday. Irving said that most dislodged rocks were retained and the Village will begin repairing the seawall immediately.

The Village also repoened both lanes of Asharoken Avenue at 5:45 p.m. Monday after severe flooding prompted Irving to close off Asharoken Avenue on Sunday. A trail of sand left from receeded floodwaters can still be seen running the length of road.

As of Monday afternoon, most residents have returned to their homes in Asharoken, although a few are still without power and many are facing downed trees and power lines.

"We had a nice sunny day today," Irving said. "Everything's drying out and people are back on the beach and doing what everyone else is doing--cleaning up their private property of debris."
