Asharoken Election Tuesday

Two uncontested candidates are seeking seats on the board of trustees.

Monday, June 6 was the final meeting Deputy Mayor Pete Masterson and Trustee John Elefante would spend as board members. At least for the next two years.

The two are both stepping down and — barring a last-minute write-in campaign for another candidate — will be replaced by two new uncontested trustees seeking two-year terms for the unpaid positions.

Mary P. Pierce has been an Asharoken resident for almost three decades and formerly ran a wholesale home accessories company.

Joseph L. Catanzano is a financial services professional who has lived in Asharoken for five years. Prior to that he lived in Fort Salonga and Northport.

They are both running on the 'Quality of Life' line.

Voting will be held Tuesday, June 21, from noon to 9 p.m. at Asharoken Village Hall.

To find out if you're registered to vote in the election, contact Asharoken Village Clerk Nancy Rittenhouse for assistance. Rittenhouse also serves as election officer. Voter registration can also be verified here.

To register to vote, an individual must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years of age on Election Day
  • A resident of New York State and Asharoken Village for at least 30 days preceding the election.

All Absentee Ballots must be received no later than the close of polls on Election Day. If you choose to walk-in and fill out an absentee application you must do so by June 20.

Masterson first served as a trustee from 2001 to 2003. He was appointed in 2008 by then-newly-elected Mayor Pat Irving to fill the seat she left vacant when  she was elected to her current position in an upset over longtime mayor Bill Kelly. Masterson was elected to a full term in June 2009, as was Elefante.
