VIDEO: East Northport Fire Department Commemorates 9/11

A helicopter, doves, sirens and song were all part of the East Northport Fire Department's 10th anniversary remembrance of 9/11.

The marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday with doves, sirens, song and a fly-over by a Suffolk County Police helicopter.

The Tights singing group began the ceremony with a performance of the National Anthem followed by a welcome from Chief Michael Tarantino and a prayer by Chaplain Doug Trumpa.

A candle-light vigil was held while members of the East Northport Fire Department and neighboring Fire Departments read off the names of the dead. Senior member Leroy Kennedy rang the commemorative bell in tribute.

A flock of doves was released after the Marine Corps League gave a 21 gun salute followed by the performance of Taps by Centerport Fire Department, Amazing Grace performed by the , America the Beautiful performed by the Northport High School Tights, and God Bless America performed by Allison Day.

Lt. Frank Giovinco, head of the 9/11 ceremony orgainzation committee, gave the closing remarks: "Ten years later, we have learned how the worst tragedy in United States history somehow brought out the very best of America," Giovinco said. "The so-called ordinary people boldly emerged as extraordinary heroes in the chaos. These selfless acts of heroism, bravery, and courage exhibited that September morning embody the beauty of the human spirit."

To cap off the ceremony, a Suffolk County Police helicopter flew overhead down the length of Larkfield.

The East Northport Fire Department will hold another ceremony at 8 p.m. which will include a candle-light vigil, a reflecting pool, and two infinity light beams representing the Twin Towers. A smaller piece of WTC steel from a neighbouring fire department will be featured. 

The piece of World Trade Center steel given to the East Northport Fire Department in March was not installed in time for the ceremony due to financial constraints, although the Fire Department hopes to have it installed within a year.
