Toddler Drowns in Heckscher Park Pond

Suffolk police say boy, 2, fell into water.

A Huntington Station toddler drowned Sunday morning in a pond at Heckscher Park.

Suffolk County Police said they responded to a 911 call about 11:40 a.m. that a boy had fallen into a pond. The 2-year-old boy, who was at the park with his father, had been pulled from the pond when police arrived. A Good Samaritan was administering CPR.

A Second Precinct officer took the boy and his father to Huntington Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death, which is believed to be accidental.

So 2 people have drowned in 40 years so we should hire lifeguards? If the lifeguard had only been paid $75K per year that lifeguard would have cost us 3million without benefits or any other increases. People die. It is sad but part of life. It does not mean we coutinue to spiral into knee jerk reactions in the name of "safety" that tax us out of out lives like we are seeing now. Why not put bumpers on the LIE? Give everyone a private driver, and tell me again why cigarettes are still legal.....people need to parent better....period. If you cant handle watching your children choose a park without a pond.

Linda you are heartless!!!! I don't think you would be so cavalier to say "So 2 people drowned in 40 years" If it was your child!!! And BTW, lifeguards don't make $75k a year!! If the taxes are too heavy a burden for you on LI...leave, and take that attitude with you!

Christine - a lifeguard would only encourage swimming. I agree w/Linda, watch your kids. We can't bubble wrap and shelter them.

Christine I have had to move in with my children because taxes are too high. If it was my child at that age that drowned it would be my fault and my fault alone and only I would have to live with it. I would not make it a financial burden on all of society.

In California they make $100K (lifeguards) ... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/20/salary-compensation-of-100k-newport-riles_n_864626.html the ones that make you think you should go swimming.....so not sure how or why you would know how much they do ro do not make but ANY amount is too much. We need to stop bubblewrapping society and trying to protect them from themselves all the time at such a cost, the cost is called regulation which has caused business's to leave long island and the taxes that support it? People, like myself, to have to move, sell your house (if you can) or move in with your kids. But hey! Thanks for being a good neighbor and telling me to leave, I can't go anywhere now.....I am too old, my American Dream home I was taxed out of and your non-heartless answer is too move. Thank you for your understanding and kindness. SO I stand by what I said before. IN 14,600 days....2 people have died. I would call that a very safe park statistically speaking.
