Police: E. Northport Man Kills St. James Ex, Self

Parents of 13-month-old baby found dead in separate homes Monday, police say.

UPDATED: 8:35 p.m. – An East Northport man killed his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child on Monday, before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

Authorities said James Schultz, 31, picked up his 13-month-old child from the house of Katherine Farrell, 23, of 3 Hill Road in St. James early Monday morning. That's when police said Schultz stabbed the baby's mother to death.

Police said they responded a 911 call at 8:59 a.m. at 7 Loret Lane in East Northport, where Schultz lived with his parents. According to police, Schultz had left the baby in another room before going to another part of the house and shooting himself. The child was not harmed.

Police said that when they tried to notify the child's mother later in the day, they found she had not gone to work. Officers then went to Farrell's house, where they found her dead.

Child Protective Services was called and police said they are still investigating.
