Plainview Parents Organize Impromptu Halloween Party

Moms and Dads decide Halloween was happening no matter what. Nassau cops break up gathering.

It was an undercover Halloween operation and the parents probably had as much fun as the kids.

Public officials across the region ravaged by Hurricane Sandy were urging parents to postpone trick or treating out of safety concerns. That didn't work out so well.

It started as an email campaign among Plainview area parents. They would hold a "Trick or Trunk" party at the Stratford Road Elementary School at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Instead of door to door, the kids would go "trunk to trunk."

All the organizers asked not to be identified and asked that the unauthorized gathering not be publicized in advance. None would speak on the record.

Still, despite widespread power outages across Plainview, the news spread like leaves on a brisk autumn wind.

Hundreds of kids in elaborate costumes and their parents converged on the school. By 2:30 p.m., there was suburban gridlock on Stratford and Darley roads. The Harry Potters, the witches and all variety of little ghouls cleaned up on candy and other delights.

Someone alerted the law: a Nassau County police officer arrived at 3 p.m., his lights flashing. On a loud speaker he demanded the area be cleared and the assembly dispersed.

No matter: Halloween came after all.

Please add your Halloween pictures to this story, either from the event at Stratford Road or from other gatherings in Plainview.

Just a couple of corrections/updates. First the police were there to help a car that wasn't starting and not to try to break it up. Dr. Lewis showed up to check on the school and to her surprise found 500 or so people having a great time in the parking lot. She asked that it end shortly for safety reasons. She did however love the idea and asked the organizers to work with the school district to put it on the calendar for next year. I know this because I was at the kitchen table on Tuesday when my wife came up with the idea she called Trunk or Treat and discussed with her friends how they were going to make it happen. Great job celebrating Halloween!

Again, our terrific Plainview community gets together to make the best of difficult situations. All of you have been there for the Reis family during the past most difficult year, the hurricane is a natural disaster that we all survived and with eachothers support we come through. Thank you again, Jeff Reis!

My hats off to the organizers. It was a brilliant idea and a good time was had by all!

The real story is the asshole that "alerted the law."

Actually, the police did ask everyone to leave. "Happy Halloween...now get out of here...they don't want you here". I have video, if I could figure out how to post it.
