NorthShoreAlert: LIPA, Weather Update

The latest for Port Washington and Manhasset.

NorthShoreAlert, the mass communication system for the Port Washington-Manhasset peninsula, issued this alert at 12:30 p.m. Sign up for alerts at NorthShoreAlert.org.

  • LIPA reports that the number of workers on the peninsula has increased to 226 today. While many, many homes and sections in our area are without power, we can report that a material number of smaller sections have come back on since yesterday afternoon. We also just left a conference call between LIPA and elected leadership from across Long Island. LIPA claims that today’s Nor’easter is setting them back on their goal of “90% restored by end of today”. We are skeptical that is the cause. The outages that remain in the PW-M area are typical of what communities are reporting. Please note, we are not defending LIPA, merely passing information on to you, so you can plan. It still would seem that 90% restoration for THIS peninsula is a few days away.
  • Weather issues: Winds to 30 mph till 11 p.m. tonight with gusts to 70. Tonight the temperature will fall to 35 degrees. If you are without heat, consider seeking sleeping shelter at Nassau Community College. If you have not seeked shelter because you have a pet, a pet shelter is open at Nassau County Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Also, as a reminder, please check on neighbors that may be in need. And if transport to shelter is what you or they require, we can help.
  • The POD at the PW train for the distribution of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) and Water is being closed by County at 2pm today.
  • The PWMOEM Recovery Center at Landmark, which is a day shelter, will be closing after today. We will advise on other places to day shelter in our next communique.
  • Lastly, this OEM is looking for volunteers to assist for future events and in building the organization. If you can offer a few hours a month to prepare our community, please fill out the Volunteer link on the pwmoem.org homepage. The needed includes: an HR leader, graphic designer, PR, and operations people to staff and organize an emergency operations center, shelters, and distribution centers.
