Northport Police Report: DWI Arrest; Dog in Car

Incidents and arrests reported between May 31 and June 4.

The following incidents and arrests were reported by the Northport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction as all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Michael Oconnell, 36, of Northport was arrested and charged with DWI, DWI BAC, and an equipment violation for a broken headlight on May 31. Police allegedly pulled Oconnell over on Laurel Avenue for a broken headlight then observed him to be intoxicated. He failed a field test and a breath test and was placed under arrest.
  • Christian Woods, 28, of Mount Sinai was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after he was allegedly found in possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia on June 1.
  • On May 31, Northport Police assisted two occupants on a moored boat in Northport Harbor who were having mechanical trouble. The boat owner and officer obtained gear fluid and the boat was able to continue on its voyage from Connecticut.
  • Things went from bad to worse at a residence on Fort Salonga Road when a woman suffered an ankle injury on May 31. While Northport Rescue was treating the woman, her mother developed a diabetic emergency and had to be taken to the hospital.
  • A hit and run was reported on Scudder Avenue on June 6. A car backed out of a driveway, hitting another car, and then fled the scene.
  • Police responded to the report of a dog in distress in a locked car on Main Street June 1 around 5 p.m. Upon arrival, police determined that the dog was not in any danger as the windows were rolled down. Five minutes later, police responded to the scene again after another report and saw several people attempting to break into the car to "save" the dog. The officer removed the dog from the vehicle and placed him at headquarters. The owner was notified, responded and retrieved his dog.
  • Police responded to Steers Avenue for a report of smoke in the area on June 2. Upon arrival with the Northport Fire Department, the cabana/BBQ at 46 Steers Avenue was discovered to be on fire.
  • A woman was driving southbound on Woodbine Avenue June 3 when a child ran between two vehicles into traffic. The woman slammed on her brakes and the child ran into the passenger side mirror of her car. The child's mother picked her up and made sure she was ok. The mother transported child to the hospital to have her checked out.
  • Police assisted a large group of school children cross Main Street.
