Northport Police Blotter: Why Did I Park Atop Snowbank? Because I Can

A Jeep owner parks on snow; license plates are lost or stolen; purses and watches found and returned. This is more from the reports of the Northport Police Department for Feb. 13 through Feb. 23.

Police responded to the Wednesday, Feb. 23 following a call reporting that a 52-year-old Smithtown woman fell through a trap door behind the counter. The door had been removed for access to workers doing repairs. The woman was transported to Huntington Hospital.

Geraldine Daly of Terry Road, Northport, called police Wednesday, Feb. 23 to report that, upon returning from vacation, she had noticed her front license plate, NY DALYBRED, was missing from her vehicle. Police advised her to surrender the rear plate and they would file a report with New York State at that time.

Police received a report Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2:08 p.m. that trees were allegedly being cut at the in violation of the Northport Village Code by Bill Beener’s Tree Service. Police arrived and found Code Compliance Officer Bud Rudloff on the scene. Police photographed the area and remained on the scene until Rudloff completed his assignment.

Police responded to the Wednesday, Feb. 23 to investigate the activation of a fire alarm. Upon arrival, the advised police that the alarm was false and the system was being tested.

A 53-year-old Greenlawn man called police Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 11:45 p.m. to report that a second-floor window at 16 North Road, Northport was open.  The man gave police a key and they inspected the interior, walked through the house and closed and locked the window. All appeared secure.

An anonymous caller reported Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 8:04 p.m. that a 2001 gray Jeep Cherokee was parked on a snow bank in the shopping center. The caller felt the vehicle was stolen. Police responded, found the driver, 27-year-old Brandon Shoman of Bethany Drive, Commack, who provided proof that the vehicle was not stolen. He said he merely though that he could park on the snow bank because he owned a Jeep. The driver was warned and admonished and advised to park in a marked spot on his next journey to the store.

A 49-year-old Mar-Kan Drive, Northport resident called police Monday, Feb. 21 at 11:47 a.m. to report that a snowplow had damaged his front lawn. Police investigated and found the damage to be minor. It appeared the plow turned over a small section of grass while attempting to plow the roadway during the snowstorm. The area was within 25-feet of the center of the road, part of the right-of-way. Northport Village Highway Department will be notified to put down seed in the spot in the spring.

A 77-year-old Main Street, Northport man called police Monday, Feb. 21 to report that a 53-year-old East Northport man had plowed snow from a driveway in such a manner that, should Main Street, get replowed, the snow would land on the sidewalk. The Northport man stated that police regarding this previously had interviewed him and he wanted the law enforced for all violators. The snowplower said he did all he could to minimize the snow brought on to Main Street, but his work was hampered by the Northport man’s vehicle, which was parked directly across from the driveway he was plowing. Police advised the men to avoid each other.

Police responded to Monday, Feb. 21 at 5:05 a.m. after receiving call reporting the sound of broken glass. Police were unable to find any broken glass.

A 54-year-old Burt Avenue, Northport woman called police Saturday, Feb. 19 at 12:43 p.m. to report that her neighbor’s tree had fallen on her 24-year-old daughter’s 2010 Hyundai Electra, damaging the car.  There was no answer at the neighbor’s door. Police took photos.

Police were notified Saturday, Feb. 19 at 10:35 a.m. that a boat at the lobster dock was taking on water. Police left a voice mail message for owner Dennis Teal, 57, explaining the situation.

Police received a report Friday, Feb. 18 at 10:55 p.m. of a male walking along the edge of the . Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate the man.

Police responded to the Friday, Feb. 18 at 9:44 p.m. following an abandoned 911 call. Police found basketball practice going on and a youth who stated his little brother was playing with the pay phone inside the building. Police spoke to the basketball coach who confirmed there was no problem at the location.

A 24-year-old Northport woman called police Friday, Feb. 18 at noon to report a suspicious vehicle with two women inside parked in front of her house.  Police responded and interviewed the woman who said they had stopped to make a phone call. A summons was issued to the driver, Lelis Reyes, Fort Salonga Road, Northport, for not having a valid New York state license.

A Fox Lane, Northport, man called police Friday, Feb. 18 at 2:08 p.m. to report a found dog at . Police located the dog owner who retrieved the dog.

A Scudder Place resident called police Thursday, Feb. 17 at 11:37 p.m. to report her neighbor working on a vehicle and revving the engine. Police spoke to the man who agreed to cease his activities for the evening.

A 55-year-old resident of an apartment building on Bayview Avenue, Northport called police Thursday, Feb. 17 at 11:18 p.m. to report that another resident of her building had been banging on her door. Police interviewed both parties and found they have been having an ongoing dispute regarding the caller’s noise during the evening hours. Police advised the first woman to keep the noise to a minimum and the second to deal with the situation in a more civil manner.

A 60-year-old Main Street, Northport woman reported to police that unauthorized withdrawals had occurred on her checking account Saturday, Feb. 12. The woman said the company that made the withdrawal is called Brenda & Associates.  The woman said she had performed an Internet search and found the company has targeted several people nationwide and made the same withdrawal for the same exact amount, $4.93, without permission. This report was filed for informational purposes, as the complainant did not wish to pursue criminal action.

A caller reported youths skateboarding in the King Kullen shopping center parking lot Thursday, Feb. 17 at 5:07 p.m. Police responded and dispersed the youths.

A passerby walked in to police headquarters Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 11:06 p.m. to report that the front door of the was open but there were no lights on inside. Police checked and found the front door led to the foyer, which was locked and did not allow access to the building. Police closed the front door.

Via security cameras in Northport Village Park, police observed youths skateboarding in the gazebo Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6:20 p.m. Police dispersed the group and advised them of their improper use of village property.

Violet Aberham of Milland Drive reported Wednesday, Feb. 16 that one of her license plates was missing from her vehicle. The other was destroyed in a fire Nov. 15, 2010.  Aberham was advised to respond to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

An anonymous caller reported Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4:31 p.m. three individuals walking on the ice on the harbor off of . Police found three people walking on the water’s edge, not on the harbor but warned them that walking on ice was not a prudent act and should be avoided.

A 57-year-old Rutledge Avenue, Northport woman called police Sunday, Feb. 13 at 3:37 p.m. to report that she left her purse in the shopping car at King Kullen. She said she went back to the store, but the purse was gone. While police were investigating, the woman called back to say when she went home, the purse and all of its contents was hanging on her door.

A 46-year-old Huntington woman found a Raymond Weil watch on Main Street in front of the . It was placed in the property room security bin. A diary entry was made to notify the woman if no one claims the watch within a year.
