Northport Police Blotter: Stolen Jewelry, Road Rage Crash, DWI and More

The following information was supplied by the Northport Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

A Milland Drive man called police Friday, May 5 at 11:30 p.m. to report that an unknown person had rebuilt his deck. The man reported that when he came home from work, he noticed construction debris in his driveway. Police arrived and found the wood debris and a partially completed wooden deck. Further investigation revealed that the caller's neighbor had contracted a deck builder to rebuild her deck. Somehow, there had been miscommunication and the wrong deck was rebuilt. Both parties stated that they would work the situation out tomorrow and did not wish police assistance at this time.

Police received a call from Thursday, May 5 at 1:31 p.m. of a male passed out. Upon arrival, the man, a 45-year-old East Northport man was conscious. responded and transported the man to Huntington Hospital.

Police received a call reporting loud piano music coming from a house at Steers Avenue and Ocean Avenue owned by Mitchell Stein, 51. Upon arrival, undersigned heard music that was not in violation of the Northport Village code. Undersigned attempted to make contact with the homeowner to advise him of the complaint. The subject did not answer his door. Undersigned Police left a message at his place of business on Woodbine Avenue referencing the complaint. No further police action required.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle crash Friday, April 29 at 8:16 p.m. on Sandy Hollow Road. Upon arrival police interviewed both drivers who said a road rage incident caused the accident. While investigating, police observed that one of the drivers, Peter Madsen, 60, of Main Street, Northport, displayed slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, uncoordinated movements and had the smell of alcohol coming from him. Madsen performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Madsen was transported to Headquarters where an intoxilyzer breath test was administered and the defendant registered .15 blood-alcohol content. Madsen was arraigned by Judge Senzer and released on his own recognizance but held until he was sober.

A Nautilus Avenue woman reported Thursday, April 28 that jewelry was missing from a drawer in her bedroom. She reported the incident took place some time between March 28 and April 25. She reported that the only person with access to her bedroom is her cleaning person, a 27-year-old Huntington Station woman.

A Nautilus Avenue woman reported to police that a charm necklace worth approximately $2,500 was taken from her house sometimes between March 24 and March 27. The caller has a large doll collection in her house and believes the jewelry may have been taken when she was showing the collection to an invited guest.

Northport police received a call Tuesday, May 3 at 8:43 p.m. of a sick cat in the middle of Scudder Avenue. Upon arrival, police located the cat, which was subsequently taken to an emergency veterinarian by the caller, Eleanor Desmond, 79.

Police received a call from Gunther’s Tap Room Monday, May 2 of a disorderly, intoxicated woman. Police remained on the scene until a cab came to pick up the 47-year-old Northport woman to take her home.

Police received a report Saturday, May 1 at 3:18 of a “suspicious male” taking photographs of children in Northport Village Park. Police were unable to locate any persons in the area fitting the description given.

Police received a second call Sunday, May 1 about a deer carcass washing up on the beach in Asharoken. They referred the call to Asharoken police. The first call about a deer carcass came in April 28.

Police received a call Saturday, April 30 at 6:55 p.m. of several youths pulling down wires near Main Street and Union Place. Police interviewed three subjects, two 16-year-old Northport residents and a 15-year-old Northport resident, who admitted to touching wires but not pulling anything off. Police warned the subjects regarding the dangers of pulling on wires when the have no idea what they are for.

Northport police on patrol Saturday, April 30 at 1:25 p.m. received a complaint of multiple vehicles parked illegally at Steers Park. Police responded adn issued seven summonses to cars found to be parked illegally.

Jeffrey Rathbun, 35, of Northport, was arrested Saturday, April 30 at 12:15 a.m. for violating the open-container ordinance and carrying an open container of Budweiser while walking on Main Street near June Avenue. Police issued the defendant an appearance ticket for open container in lieu of arrest.

A resident of Maple Avenue called police Friday, April 29 at 11:29 p.m. to report that a neighbor was playing basketball and being noisy making it difficult to sleep. The sportsmen were asked to discontinue play for the evening and they complied.

A shift supervisor at CVS on Fort Salonga Road contacted police Thursday, April 28 at 8:37 p.m. with a report of larceny. The CVS employee stated that she recognized a black male and female couple, both in their 40s, in the store who she thought had stolen merchandise over the past few weeks. She stated she observed the pair leaving the store and driving away in a dark-colored car. She wrote down the license plate number and gave that to police, as well. She then watched the store surveillance video and saw the male subject stuffing merchandise into his shirt. She was able to determine that six boxes of women’s Rogaine were stolen. It had a value of $239.94. The employee provided a sworn statement, a larceny affidavit and a disc with a recording of the surveillance video. The case was forwarded to the village detective.

The Northport Yacht Club dock master reported Thursday, April 28 finding a boat that had broken loose in the harbor. The dock master tied the boat to its dock until the owner could be contacted to retrieve it. Boat owner Richard Seeger of Greenlawn was notified.

Northport police received a report Thursday, April 28 at 6:22 a.m. of a deer carcass washing up on the beach in Asharoken. The call was forwarded to and the Town of Huntington was notified.
