Northport Grad Killed on Railroad Tracks

A woman was struck by a westbound train just after 5 a.m.

A 20-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning when she was hit by a Long Island Rail Road train just west of the Northport station.

"A a little after 5 a.m., a westbound train originating in Port Jefferson train fatally struck a person on the tracks near Elwood Road," said MTA spokesperson Sam Zambuto. "The person was not at the crossing."

Zambuto said the incident is currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Transportation Agency police as a possible suicide.

Service was suspended on the Port Jefferson line from 5 - 7 a.m. The train involved in the incident was the 4:18 a.m. out of Port Jefferson heading to Penn Station.

"There were three trains canceled and several other trains that were held at stations as a result of the incident, including the train the was involved," Zambuto said. "Those that were held operated approximately two hours late."

When an accident such as this occurs, Zambuto said it is typically the train crew who calls it in to the MTA's operations center.

As per MTA regulations, the crew is also required to see a Long Island Rail Road counselor before reporting back to work, he said.

He added that pedestrians should never walk on the railroad tracks and always cross at designated crossings.

As reported earlier this month on Northport Patch, Northport High School principal Irene McLaughlin has repeatedly warned students away from the tracks in her morning announcement.

The victim was a member of Northport High School's Class of 2008. Northport Patch will continue to follow this story.
