Five village roads remain closed as of Thursday night, according to Northport Police. They are Union Place, Scudder Place between Vail and Short Street, Chestnut Circle between Doris and Laurel Street, Burt Avenue between Chestnut and Oak, and Cherry Street/ Soper Avenue.
Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal said the village is waiting on LIPA to remove downed trees tangled in powerlines, such as those at Union Place, which he described as a "viper's nest" of wires and debris. Northport employees are forbidden by law from working on trees or limbs hanging from or touching wires.
"We're waiting for utility crews to clear those streets with the wires," he said, "once the wires are gone any trees or poles can be removed by the highway department."
Bruckenthal said that the village and police department have not gotten any response from LIPA. "Every time something new comes down we'll advise them, but they have not given us any information," he said. "It's a one-way stream."
