Fishermen Stranded Outside Northport Harbor

Five men rescued by authorities after spending hours adrift in the middle of the night.

A late night fishing trip turned into a harrowing wait for five men who became stranded outside Northport Harbor on Monday night.

The men, who ranged in age from 30 to 70, were fishing for porgy around 2 a.m. when the battery in their motor died and they became stranded, Suffolk Police told the Associated Press.

They called 911 and were located in Long Island Sound by a police helicopter after spending three hours adrift. A boat met the men at sea and they were towed to the Long Island Power Authority ramp by a a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.

No one on the boat was injured.
