Fire and Water District Elections Tuesday

Contested election for East Northport Fire Commissioner.

Fire and water district elections are on Tuesday. Elected commissioners will serve a five year term commencing on January 1, 2013 and ending on December 31, 2017. Here is the information you need to know:

Eatons Neck Fire District: Incumbent Phillip Whiter is running unopposed for a five-year term. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Eaton's Neck Fire House.

East Northport Fire District: Firefighter Michael Vespier is challenging incumbent Nicholas Macedonio in the East Northport Fire Commissioner election.

Vespier, a 23-year member of the ENFD, said he's running because its "time for change" at the top. He hopes that his background with the fire department and as retired General Superintendent of the New York City Transit Authority will assist him in providing the community with the best Fire and EMS service possible.

In his career with the MTA, he had 500 employees under his direction and said he has learned management skills such as the staying within an allotted budget.

Vespier served as an ENFD trustee for four years, vice president for two years and president for three years and is presently the health and safety officer. He also attends meetings of the board of fire commissioners.

Macedonio is running for his second five year term as commissioner. His family has served in the fire department for three generations and he is entering his 32nd year with the East Northport Fire Department.

Macedonio works as a heavy equipment operator for the town of Huntington. "I work with many people and consider myself a people-person," he said. "I do a lot of hands on work and I know it's all about getting your hands dirty."

He hopes to be reelected so he continue working with the board and oversee efforts to get the East Northport Fire Department Headquarters Building fully updated.

"This year we have more projects getting ready to be started and I want to be there to take care of them," he said.

Polls are open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the East Northport Fire House, One Ninth Ave., East Northport.
