Crimes Nearby: Couple Accused of Burglary; Stores Sold Alcohol To Children

A couple accused of stealing a Purple Heart was arrested in Deer Park and more crimes in the towns around Northport.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Suffolk County Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Deer Park

A World War II veteran’s Purple Heart stolen last week has been recovered with the arrest of a couple police say are responsible for six break-ins over the past two weeks.

Ryan O’Malley, 33, and Nicole Oliva, 29, who were living at the Deer Park Motor Inn, were arrested this weekend and are charged with six counts of burglary second degree, possession of burglar tools and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Oliva is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun.

Suffolk County police said the couple committed six burglaries, including one on Nov. 4 during which they stole a Purple Heart medal from Thomas Barden of West Babylon. Barden received the medal after he was shot in the head during the invasion of Normandy in 1944.

The arrests came after Officers Brian Kopke and John Burns noticed a gray 2000 Dodge Durango in the parking lot of the Deer Park Motor Inn that matched the description of a vehicle used during one of the burglaries. 

Commack

Three businesses in Commack and one in Smithtown were found to be in violation of state liquor law after Suffolk County Police Department conducted a sting on Friday.

According to police, employees at Hess Express in Commack, , and a in Commack and Smithtown all sold alcohol to a minor after they failed to properly inspect identification of the agent purchasing alcohol.

Arrested and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree were Matthew Burger, 20; Brian Farrell, 21; Mary Marvin, 36; and Jatinder Kumar, 34. They were all given a field appearance ticket to appear at First District Court in Central Islip.

Rona Lawes, 34, of Uniondale was arrested in Commack Nov. 3 and charged with second-degree burglary. Lawes allegedly unlawfully entered a building at Gerwin Nursing and Rehab Center on Hauppauge Road on Oct. 30.

Ariana Labrocca, 42, of Huntington, was arrested Oct. 25 in Commack and charged with criminal mischief. According to police, at 7:15 p.m., Labrocca broke the glass case of a fire extinguisher inside the at 2231 Jericho Turnpike. She then reportedly sprayed the fire extinguisher in the hallway. At 8:10 p.m., Labrocca broke a plastic ash tray inside her room, police said.

Kings Park

A motorcycle was stolen from a home in Kings Park last week. Police say a 1998 black Harley Davidson motorcycle was taken from the garage of the homeowner during the day.

The owner of the home was not home at the time.
