Suffolk County Police issued a Silver Alert Wednesday night regarding a missing East Northport 17-year-old girl who may be suffering from bipolar disorder.

Melissa DiDaniele, of 80 Norton Drive, East Northport, left her residence on Dec. 2 and was last seen in Central Park in New York City on Friday, Dec. 6.

Her family fears she may not be seeking shelter from the cold weather and would like to locate her, police said in a press statement.

DiDaniele is described as a white female with short dark hair, blue eyes and a lip ring. She is 5-feet-tall and weighs 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing black pants, a green coat, a multi colored beanie hat and a black backpack. She may or may not be wearing non-prescription glasses that have a black frame.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on her whereabouts to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

The Silver Alert is a program implemented in Suffolk County that allows local law enforcement to share information with media outlets about individuals with special needs who have gone missing.

If people can, encourage authorities to check the Lower East Side "East Village" area. When I lived there I realized that a lot of run away kids, or otherwise troubled kids, stay outdoors in around the Tompkins Square Park and the St. Marks Place area. I imagine this is still true, and perhaps true of the West Village as well.

Please note: Melissa goes by "Skylar" to friends and strangers alike and identifies as MALE, not female. He is transgendered. So if people are looking for a female they aren't gonna find him. He went to somewhere in Harlem last time he ran away (at least part of the time). I hope the authorities are aware of this

Wow why are the police not providing the correct information for this missing BOY???!!!!?!! I don't understand why the family is not correcting them for putting incorrect info out to the public. If they want their child found then the right info should be going out! Very upsetting! I hope and pray that Skylar is found safe!

Maybe they're providing the info the parents gave them? After all, "went to somewhere in Harlem last time he ran away." This isn't the first time so there's a good chance the parents don't agree with the lifestyle which is what encouraged the disappearance.
