Janice T. Woods, Retired Librarian

Woods worked as a local librarian and was a member of the church choir.

Janice T. Woods, a former East Northport resident, died Oct. 17 at Wingate at Hampden, in Massachusetts, at the age 89.

Woods was born on Aug. 28, 1924, in Malden, WV, the fifth child of the Reverend George Wesley Thumm, a Methodist minister, and Myrtle Jarrett Thumm. She lived in multiple locations while her father served different churches across West Virginia.

She was educated at Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) and the University of Illinois, where she met her husband-to-be while they were both in library school. She worked as a librarian at the Melville branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library. She retired in 1991 after 17 years.

After her retirement, Woods spent her time traveling, visiting Oberammergau, Germany, Israel and China.

According to her obituary, published in the Rochester Democrat And Chronicle, Woods was very active in the Commack United Methodist Church, serving in leadership roles and singing for many years in the choir. She moved to Springfield, Mass., in 2008 to be closer to her daughter.

A memorial service will be held on Long Island at the CUMC in November.

The burial will be in Red Oak, Iowa, in the Woods family plot. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or to the Commack United Methodist Church.

Lombard Funeral Home of Monson, Massachusetts has been entrusted with the arrangements.
