George Smith, Jr. Dies at 82

Former Northporter was a lifelong aviator and descendent of Smithtown founder.

George H. Smith Jr., a.k.a. "HAP," died at the age of 82 on Jan. 19.

He was born in Northport and a lifelong aviator, decorated Navy pilot, retired UAL captain, ALPA rep, former NYC Greeter and 11th generation American and descendant of Smithtown, NY founder Richard "BULL" Smith.

He lived most recently in Tamarac FL. He was the husband of the late Berniece Barrett from Davie, FL, loving son of the late George Sr. and Myrtle of Northport. Survived by his sweet sister Laura Dove Barrows of Northport, beloved father of Susan Lynn Smith and George H. Smith III, of Singer Island, FL, Cynthia Smith-Dmtrenko (Stanley) of Margate, FL, Steven Barrett Smith (Lily) of Katy, TX and Marie Smith-Potter (Robert) of Bellwood, PA. Caring grandfather of Daniel Lee Smith of Walla Walla, WA, Amanda Lynn Gray of Davie, FL, Katelyn Elizabeth Gray of Kissimmee, FL, Phoebe Potter and Beau Potter of Bellwood, PA. Proud great-grandfather of Leah Madelyn Smith, Walla Walla, WA with another on the way (Katelyn).

Reposing at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-5  and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Church. Interment to follow at Northport Rural Cemetery.  Friends and family will be received at the home of Dale Mankuski.
