Curtis George Mains, 51, Dies After Tragic Accident

East Northport resident remembered as generous and "an old soul."

Curtis George Mains, Jr., 51, of East Northport lost his life suddenly on Thursday after a tragic accident.

Mains was at Home Depot in Commack on Wednesday, where he worked, when he fell and sustained a traumatic brain injury. He passed away in the hospital despite all the doctors did to save him.

His younger sister, Doreen Koch, spoke to Patch from Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home where the wake was being held. "We're in total shock," she said.

Curtis, a 50-year resident of East Northport, was an avid fan of sports, oldies music, dancing, and spirited debate known to loved ones for his kindness and generosity. He would do all he could to bring joy to the people around him, especially in times of need.

"Curtis was a great person and anyone who knew him will say he was a giver," said Doreen. "He'd go up to Home Depot where there was a man there whose wife is coping with cancer and he would bring a cake up and surprise him and sing; he did all these things for people that he never talked about."

Curtis suffered many losses in his family over the years. His youngest sibling Dennis Timothy Mains was taken by cancer at 25 and both parents passed away in the last two years in what Doreen called "a whirlwind of death."

Curtis was the beloved son of the late Margaret (Peggy) Murphy and Curtis, Sr; adored older brother and family patriarch of Doreen Koch, Meg McFadden, Kerrie Cullinan, Tara Iacucci and the late Dennis Timothy Mains; cherished brother in-law of Eric Koch, Michael McFadden and Lou Iacucci; and Best uncle in the world to Kayla, Shannon, Colleen and Shane Koch, Michael, Brooke and Brianna McFadden and Andrew Iacucci.

"He was an old soul," said Doreen, adding to the final words of his obituary: Those who knew him appreciated his animated ways, his giving heart and his smiling Irish eyes. Life will never be the same without him.

Remaining visiting hours are on Monday at 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home in Northport. Funeral Mass is on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Church. Interment parish cemetery.
