Week 7 Game Recaps and Scores

Black Tigers 14, Red Tigers 7

It's too bad that someone had to lose this game. In a classic battle at Northport High School the two 5/6 year old division teams from Northport squared off against each other. This was a hard hitting game from the beginning and offense was hard to come by. The Black Tigers were the first on the board. Tim McLam scampered around the right end for a 15 yard Touchdown run to cap off an 8 play drive. Red answered back with a handoff by Preston Carey to Gavin Stabile who had a blistering run to even it up. The game was deadlocked at 7 going in to the half. Quinn Reynolds took the ball early in the 3rd quarter and got stopped just shy of a touchdown. William Meyer led the Red defense, with Ryan McCloskey making 2 sacks, and Thomas O'Brien and Jace DiPalo making key tackles. Luka Elmaleh took the ensuing snap in for a score, but the Black Tigers were unable to muster much more offense from the stingy defense of the Red Tigers. They had to settle for a one touchdown lead and the Red Tigers getting 10 more plays to tie it up or win. The Black Tigers equally formidable defense held Red off the board in the 4th quarter and the lead was preserved. Standout defensive performances for the Black squad were turned in by Julien Bush, Giancarlo Valenti and Quinn Napolitano. As far as the coaches are concerned there was no loser in this game, just two teams that both left it all out on the field and played with Tiger pride. *************************

5/6 Red Tigers 21 vs. Half-Hollow Hills 35

In a special 5/6 division Friday night game under the lights at Veterans Field, the Red Tigers faced their Half-Hollow Hills nemesis. Dubbed "The Tiger Bowl", the game lived up to its reputation. The offensive showdown started with a handoff by Preston Carey to Anthony Lang who left a trail of broken tackles for a quick touchdown for the Red Tigers. HHH answered back with a touchdown, and the exchange between offenses continued. With a handful of players sick, the Red Tigers did not have the endurance to keep pace. They would fall by two touchdowns to HHH, but not before Anthony Lang smacked down another touchdown and Gavin Stabile bulldozed through for another score. Ryan McCloskey headlined the defense with Thomas O'Brien and Jace DiPalo making big plays. The offensive and defensive lines did an impressive job, and everyone contributed. The Red Tigers played their hearts out, and the boys and their families got a taste of the essence of Northport Football: Crisp fall air, cheerleaders on the sidelines, a grandstand full of cheering families, and hearing their names called out on the loudspeaker. I suspect all of these boys will be back next season and new players can find registration information at www.northportyouthfootballclub.com.

7/8 yr old Red Tigers 13 vs. Riverhead 6

The Tigers came out of the gate with a nice opening drive that resulted in a turnover. The defense stopped Riverhead on a 3 and out and the ball was back in the hands of the Tiger offense. On a 4th down the ball went in to the hands of Jack Sandrib who raced up the sideline for a 30 yard touchdown run. Jacob Buell ran in the extra point and the Tigers would never look back. This game was about the defense. The Tigers would bend but never break. Michael Petrucelly made 3 tackles in the backfield for losses, when they ran away from him Michael Meyer was there to make the play. The Tigers defense was swarming all game. The team was committed to making the plays even if it meant slowing the opponent down and getting help from their teammates. The Tigers played well in every aspect of this game and close out their season next week. Season Record 6-1

9 yr old Black Northport 6 vs. Long Island Sound Sharks 6

The Tigers followed their usual pattern Sunday by dominating the offensive line of scrimmage allowing Fullback Vinnie Bruno to run wild on the inside behind the excellent lead blocking of Andrew Argyris, and Rafe Carner to get around the end on the sweep. Carner had an amazing game over all with several good runs, including the Tigers' only touchdown, 2 impressive and important punts, an interception to stop a Sound Sharks' drive in the Red Zone and open field tackles that saved touchdowns and stopped the Sound Sharks try for an extra point, preserving the tie. Defensively, the Tigers had their work cut out for them against a team that had scored 103 points in their first 6 games. They played great team defense, gang tackling all day and held out until the final seconds of the game when the Sound Sharks just wouldn't be denied, scoring in the game's final seconds. The coaches are very proud of the guts and determination shown by this special group of young men. The Tigers' record now stands at 3-3-1, and the team looks to continue its excellent play next week at Longwood. ***********************

9 yr old Red Tigers 18 vs. Commack 6

Northport came out with a vengeance and dominated Commack on Sunday. In the first play of the game defense captain Zach Evans and center Ryan Farrington opened up a hole and Bruce Peden wasted no time bolting through, with some key blocking in the end zone by Ryan Bell Northport got their first touchdown. Some good tackles by Thomas McDonagh, Thomas Serra and a fumble recovery by Angelo Prestipino got Nrpt on the offense again. A fake to the halfback and QB Christian Pastore had a great run around the outside for the second touchdown. Northport defense of Matt Powers and Tyler Florio helped to hold Commack at the 45 yard line. With some good offensive runs getting Nrpt in the end zone allowed Conner Gallagher to get the pass and run for 10 yards scoring the third TD. Northport defense never let Commack through, Jake Serroen and Connor Higgins did a great job stopping an attempted run up the center to end the 3rd quarter. A good run in the 4th quarter by Aaron Winnegar for a 32 yard gain. Northport worked together as a team and battled hard to come out with the win. Looking forward to building on our success next week. Season Record 2-3 *************************

9yr Old Blue Tigers 20 vs. Half Hollow Hills 12

Highlights: After a sluggish start, the Tigers came on strong to beat Half Hollow Hills 20-12. The Tigers started the game on defense and behind strong efforts from Anton, Brustmeyer, McElroy, Locker & Teiner, held Half Hollow Hills scoreless on their first two possessions. Unfortunately it took the Tiger’s offense a while to get going as they fumbled on their first few possessions – one of which led to a 50 yard fumble return for a TD to stake Hills to a 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, Luke Rizzo took a keeper around end for a 60 yard TD run. He added the extra point to put the Tigers up 7-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Tigers offense took control of the game with a 12 play drive that was capped off by 5 yard TD run and extra point by Rizzo to put Northport up 14-6. This drive - behind solid blocking from Bettano, Felice, Fiorino, Fernandez and Jolly - consumed the entire third quarter and the first minute of the fourth quarter. Running backs Atkinson, DeMarco, Hutton, Starcke and Tittmann each had a couple of runs to keep the chains moving and the Hills offense off the field. When the Hills offense finally got their chance in the second half, they responded with a quick TD drive but the Tiger defense blocked the extra point to keep the Tigers ahead 14-12. On Northport’s next possession, Rizzo rumbled about 70 yards for a TD to extend the Tigers lead to 20-12. The Tiger’s defense took over from there – behind great defensive line play of Centamore, Chapman and Dowd and numerous tackles from Nicholas DeMarco - preventing Half Hills from getting a first down and sealing the 20-12 victory. Season Record 5-2-0

10 yr old Red Tigers 32 vs. Hauppauge 6

After a tough win week 1 against Hauppauge at home, this week the Tigers were on the road for the rematch. Northport started on defense and took control of the game with gang tackling led by Linebackers Shane Finkelstein, Max Romano and Joseph Sierra. On the first offensive series for the Tigers, Fullback Shane Finkelstein ripped up the Hauppauge defense providing a sample of the dominant Tigers running game. The Tigers had five touchdown runs on the day from five different players. The touchdowns were scored by Shane Finkelstein, Sean D'Amaro, Larry Citrola, Brian Truehart, and Max Romano. Quarterback Anthony Vozza marched the offense down the field all day long scoring on almost every possession. The Tigers offense steamrolled down the field behind the terrific blocking of offensive lineman Michael Morreale, Quinlan Finnegan, William Cuttita, Fran Braun and James Alden. The Tigers defense played hard all day with big contributions from Ryan Parker, Stephen Wyhowanec, Paul Peragallo William Hummel, William Cuttita, Anthony Canales and Dillon Brown. Defensive End Thomas Sandrib Anthony Vozza and Nicholas Serra pressured the Hauppauge quarterback all game long. An interception by Nicholas Serra capped off a great defensive performance by the Tigers. This was a great overall team win showing how the dedication and commitment put forward by the players has paid off. Season Record: 6-1 Next Week: vs. Deer Park ********************************

11 yr old Black Tigers 6 vs. Three Village 7

On a beautiful Sunday morning, Northport’s 11 year old BLACK team was on the road vs. the Three Village Wildcats in a game to decide first place. The Wildcats and Tigers Defenses would show how the day would go for each team. The Tigers and Wildcats defenses would both make big plays and turnovers on the first few series to keep the game scoreless. The Wildcats would be first to strike. Midway thru the 2nd quarter starting at the Tigers 29 yard line the Wildcats were able to get to the edge and were successful on the extra point to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Northport’s offense would mount a drive but the drive would stall deep in Wildcat territory as the first half needed. The second half opened with Wildcats driving to the Northport’s 44 yard line but the Tigers defense would stiffen and force a turn over on downs. Northport’s offense then went to the ground and pound running attack. Again the Wildcats D would not break and stopped the Tigers on 4th and 1 at the 15 to end the drive. Northport’s D dug in to give the offense a chance. After 3 plays they forced a punt to set up the Tigers at the Wildcats 40 yard line with 2:30 left in the game. The Tigers then drove 40 yards in 10 plays and scored on a Sal Miccio 2 yard TD run. With 10 seconds left in the game the Tigers sent on the kicking team to try and WIN the GAME. As the Tigers lined up for the kick the Wildcats called their last time out to try and ice the kicker. The game and first place in the division would come down to 1 play. The O line picked up all the defenders, the snap and placement were solid but the kick sailed wide left and the Tigers loss a tough fought game. The Tigers are now 4-3 and play the final game of the regular season next week at home vs. Sayville.
