: Northport Mayor George Doll showed his range as grand marshall of the annual Northport Memorial Day parade Monday morning. He led the procession from Laurel Avenue down Main Street riding a mammoth white horse. Following close behind were military veterans dating to World War II, several age groups of the Boys and Girls Scouts, Northport High School marching band and fire trucks from Eatons Neck and Northport.

: Northport's Gemport jewelry store closed its doors on Tuesday after 43 years as a Northport mainstay and just one year after moving to its new location at 691 Fort Salonga Road.

: James Dickinson, 17, had an epiphany while visiting the Washington, D.C. Vietnam War Memorial as a child that changed his view on war forever. Speaking from a podium at John J. Walsh Memorial Park during the East Northport Memorial Day ceremony, Dickinson, winner of the East Northport Knights of Columbus essay contest, recalled the weeping faces standing before a seemingly endless litany of the lost and realized that conflict was more than guns and victory celebrations. Too often, it was sacrifice.

: Elwood Schools Superintendent Peter Scordo said this week that he hopes an agreement can be reached with the teachers union on the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) process by the end of June. Under new state guidelines, districts must have a plan in place by Jan. 17, 2013 or risk losing an increase in state aid.
